12-23 November 2024
Nyungne program ran from 12-23 November2024
In the first two days, Shangpa Rinpoche taught and gave oral transmission of Avalokiteshvara and Nyunge. Under the guidance of Lama from Jangchub Choeling Monastery and Ani from Tharpa Choelong Nunnery, participants are led in the practice of four sets of nyungne. 16 November 2024 marked the completion of the first set of nyungne.
Nyungne is a special practice of Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of great compassion. A nun named Gelongma Palmo developed this practice several centuries ago. It is a powerful method for purifying the negative karma of oneself and all sentient beings, out of loving-kindness and compassion. It is a purification and retreat of the body, speech and mind where Sojong vows or Mahayana precepts are taken and observed.
On 22 November 2024, we successfully completed 4 sets of Nyungne on this very auspicious day of Lhabab Duchen in Kirtipur gompa. We rejoice in everyone’s participation and dedication. On the 22nd day of the 9th Tibetan lunar month, is Lhabab Düchen which is the day we observe the Buddha's return from the God's realm known as the Indra’s realm of the 33 Heavens. The Buddha ascended to the heavens at the age of 45 to give teachings to his mother Mayadevi who was reborn there. Buddha taught her continuously for 3 months, and at the same time benefitting the gods. Mayadevi attained enlightenment. Maudgalyayana, one of the main disciples of the Buddha, requested him to return to the human realm. The Buddha agreed and returned to the human realm a week later, after descending a celestial ladder surrounded by rainbows and celestial devotees.
On Lhabab Duchen, the effects of positive or negative actions are multiplied ten million times. Hence Buddhists engage in virtuous activities and prayer on this day. Please click here to see the video from our facebook

The recent heavy downpour in end of September 2024 resulted in flash floods in many parts of Nepal. Sadly, many homes and lives were wrecked and lost.
We Anis, on behalf of Singapore devotees (spearheaded by Vicky), donated essentials such as grains and blankets to 50 homes at Panauti and Namobhudha on the 4th of October and 100 homes at Nakkhu Lalitpur on the 5th of October.
We pray the flood victims find respite in these small gestures of kindness and hope they will be able to rebuild homes soon.

Red Chenrezig Jangchog Puja for the deceased.
Red Chenrezig, also known as Gyalwa Gyatso in Tibetan, is revered as the highest yoga tantra yidam in Kagyu traditions. As Chenrezig is the embodiment of the great compassion of all Buddhas, we also dedicate this puja to all sentient beings. May all sufferings and obstacles be eradicated.
We also took part in sojong. Sojong is a set of vows which includes refraining from eating after 12 noon untll the sun rises the next day. That is the precept of refraining from eating at inappropriate times. Sojong is a great way to heal and purify both our bodies and minds.

Commencement of the Grand Mahakala Puja
Tharpa Choeling Nunnery started the grand Mahakala Puja for half a day on this day. From the next day onwards, the puja will start from 5am til 8pm.
Mahakala Puja is practiced daily in monasteries and nunneries. However, the Grand Mahakala Puja is an all-day intensive ceremony that lasts for several days (Gutor). In tantric practice, Mahakala is the Bodhisattva or Dharmapala (guardian deity) who protects and helps us overcome obstacles. In Buddhism, obstacles do not necessarily refer to external difficulties, they encompass internal negativities (eg anger) too.
These protector practices are a way to give thanks to Mahakala, Mahakali and their retinue for helping us to dispel obstacles in the current year and also for the new year, thus creating auspiciousness to benefit all beings and the world. The 29th day is a wrathful day astrologically and hence dedicated as Mahakala day.
At the conclusion of the Gutor Mahakala puja, the ritual of averting obstacles begins with casting out the torma and ends with a fire puja.
